Readers' Poems

THE BARGES I LIKE to walk along the river bank And watch the barges come and go Black smoke from their chimneys The paint a brilliant blue The Coxon at the wheel To steer them through the gate Nothing to do but sit and wait He waves his hand to pass through A pleasant smile a wave or two Nothing is better than this lovely view.

LILIAN PRICKETT, Dunston, Gateshead THE PUB TWO old gentlemen dressed in beige Climbing up entrance steps with difficulty Sitting supping pints and talking away Putting right the world as they do Five golden girls laughing in corner Talking non-stop about their day Bus trip and shopping - all agreed Great day out had been enjoyed Couple at bar on high stools Denim jeans and blue tops on both Heads inclined talking deeply Body language comfortable together Pregnant girl with boyfriend Keeps stroking her bump No wedding ring visible, he smiles at her a lot Mam and dad with teenage son Not talking - son is bored His mobile rings - face lights up Suddenly leaves, 'see you later' Older married couple Sitting quietly, watching everyone else Drinking slowly, passing time KATY HALL, Acomb, Northumberland
